Hygienist appointments to make you smile
You can’t beat the fresh, just-polished feeling you get after a professional clean. But did you know that not only is a visit to the hygienist a great way to make your smile shine, its also is an essential part of a keeping your gums and teeth healthy.
Our gums are the foundation of our teeth and, without proper cleaning, plaque and tartar can build up leading to gum disease and eventually tooth loss. Dental hygienists use a mirror and an ultrasonic scaler to locate and remove plaque and tartar from around your gum line, as well as in between your teeth. This deep cleaning helps to protect the gums and prevent dental problems from occurring but perhaps to most important aspect of a visit to the hygienist is the advice.
A hygienist will be able to offer you cleaning and dietry advice tailored specifically to your needs. Helping to identify areas that need extra attention and giving you the tips, tools and techniques you need to protect and maintain your own teeth.
A thorough clean and polish by a hygienist can also be the perfect solution to remove the build up of stains on your teeth, such as coffee and red wine. For a special occasion such as a wedding or a party, why not go for an airflow polish to give you an extra shiny smile. This state of the art technique works by using a fine jet of compressed air, water and fine powder particles to remove staining and restore your teeth to a more natural shade.

Kathryn trained at the Bristol Dental Hospital and she plays a vital role in your dental health care. She started her early career as a Dental Nurse before qualifying as a Dental Hygienist and now has over 20 years experience in the field. Kathryn is passionate about preventive dental health, working with the wider dental team to support you and advise you in the best home care methods and helping to keep your teeth and gums in premium health.
Kathryn’s main work is to prevent and treat gum disease. This includes professionally cleaning your teeth by removing plaque and tartar. Perhaps her most important role is showing you the best way to keep your teeth clean and prevent the onset of gum disease. Kathryn can also give advice about diet and about smoking cessation.
During your Hygiene appointment Kathryn will record a gum screening looking for early indicators of gum disease with a further more detailed recording if required. Kathryn will then carefully remove the plaque and hard deposits of tartar (or ‘calculus’) that build up on the teeth usually with an Ultrasonic scaler followed by hand instrumentation, Kathryn will always ensure you are fully informed of what treatment she is providing and why, and at all times making sure you are comfortable. Kathryn will always finish your appointment off with a polish to remove any stains and shine the teeth up! She is also able to provide local anaesthetic if required especially when treating a more advanced gum disease. Kathryn is always fully supported by a Dental Nurse to further ensure your visit is as comfortable as possible.
By talking to you about your diet, and recommending and supporting you in correct home care techniques Kathryn can help you keep to a routine that will slow down tooth decay and prevent gum disease. Regular visits and advice will help build your confidence in keeping your mouth at optimum health.
